The Guardian this week published a story about Ireland’s response to the Ukrainian refugee crisis. It was, even allowing for the paper’s general liking of Ireland, glowing: the Irish were cast as heroic in their openness to taking in tens of thousands while the government rightly won praise for its loosening of standard procedures so that paperwork wouldn’t prevent traumatised Ukrainians from finding sanctuary. The editorial purpose was to juxtaposition Ireland’s approach with that of the UK, which could best be described as chronically inadequate, bureaucratic and under-resourced.
