At the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre (UPMC), it came as a bolt out of the blue seven years ago in the form of the tycoon Denis O’Brien. In the space of a few weeks, one of the world’s biggest healthcare groups found itself ousted as operator and majority shareholder in the Beacon Hospital in Sandyford in south Dublin.
