Record companies have the right to be paid whenever their recordings are broadcast or played in a bar, restaurant or anywhere in public. And performers are entitled to a cut of the royalties. In Ireland, it falls to Phonographic Performance Ireland (PPI) to administer those rights and collect royalties on behalf of the major record labels — Sony, Universal, and Warner Music.
