In the Pierce Brosnan-era James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies from 1997, Jonathan Pryce plays the megalomaniac villain, Eliot Carver, a media baron who generates geopolitical incidents which are then reported on by his news corporation before all other media outlets worldwide.  In the late 1990s, the intermingling of geopolitical manipulation, media coverage and business at a global level appeared a bit far-fetched, even for the world of James Bond.
