The Data Protection Commission has fined Maynooth University €40,000 over a data breach of staff email accounts in 2018, one of which was then used to commit fraud. The Co Kildare university informed the Data Protection Commission (DPC) about a personal data breach in November 2018. The DPC then opened an inquiry into the matter in July 2019. The breach affected the email accounts of university employees and allowed unauthorised persons to gain control of up to six staff accounts.
