A probationary period begins on a new employee’s start date and allows the employer to evaluate the employee’s suitability for the role and how they are performing. There was a time when a probationary period was a moveable feast, with the period at the employer’s gift. The European Union (Transparent and Predictable Working Conditions) Regulations 2022 changed that. Now, the standard probation period in Ireland can be at most six months. In exceptional circumstances, the probation period can be extended to 12 months.
