Several major pharmaceutical companies have railed against “unfair” new EU rules on wastewater treatment, pushing for Ireland to delay new EU legislation. The EU’s Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (UWWTD) is being revised. It sets standards on the collection, treatment and discharge of urban wastewater and is undergoing an update by lawmakers. The updated version, which MEPs signed off at the tail end of their last mandate, will require greater effort from industry to curtail harmful effluent.
