“Sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants.” This famous phrase was first turned by Louis Brandeis in an article in a 1913 edition of Harper’s Weekly. Brandeis, the activist turned lawyer and later US Supreme Court justice, argued that publicity, ie making information widely available to the public, can act as a remedy for social ills. Today, we would call this transparency. As the whole country has seen in the past year, as the chaos at RTÉ reluctantly spilled out into the public light, this was often lacking at the national broadcaster.
