November’s rioting and violence in Dublin, along with arson attacks and blockades at locations around the country, have sent ominous messages to the political establishment about public order and safety. Not least among them must be an underscoring of the need for first-rate policing and police leadership. Significant issues face the Garda Síochána, including, for the first time, attracting sufficient numbers of suitable recruits.
