Farmers are getting it tight. A drought in June, too much rain in July, a difficult harvest season, rising costs and high levels of debt. A new Farmers Alliance plans to be a new political voice for farmers and rural communities. As I write, farmers’ organisations are protesting outside parliamentary party think-ins in objection to the ending of the nitrates derogation by the EU. Farmers are most at risk from both climate impacts like floods, droughts and unpredictable growing seasons and from climate policies to reduce emissions that demand changes to the way they run their businesses.
