There is a day I am dreading. It is March 30th. On that day we will know the number of people unemployed since the outbreak of Covid-19. There are, literally, dozens of ways to measure the Irish economy, to track its successes and failures. The most important measure is also one of the simplest: the number of people working. We know for certain the number of people in employment will fall as a result of the shutdown of large parts of our economy. We don’t know how far that number will fall.
