In a Berlin museum recently, I came across an important and poignant installation; images of a department store from the great days of German retailing. The pictures celebrated a time long past when huge “palaces of consumption” selling a vast variety of products dominated Berlin’s retail sector. The buildings were grand, magnificent and opulent and were rightly recognised as architectural works of art.
